Kerala Achieves Historic Milestone as Women Across All Districts Receive Agricultural Drone Training

Women from across Kerala's districts receiving hands-on agricultural drone training in Trivandrum

In a landmark step for women in agriculture, an agricultural drone training program in Trivandrum has equipped women representatives from every district of Kerala with hands-on skills in modern drone operation. Organized by ICAR–CTCRI in collaboration with the Kudumbashree State Mission, the initiative aimed to transform the role of women across the state's agriculture sector, with our federation serving as a key implementation partner.

Training Women From All Districts of Kerala

As a core implementation partner, our federation led the training of women representatives drawn from all districts of Kerala. Participants received practical, hands-on expertise in drone operation, maintenance, and real-world field applications. Rather than purely theoretical instruction, the program emphasized rigorous practical sessions guided by experienced experts, ensuring each participant could confidently handle the technology in farming environments.

What the Participants Learned

Through expert-led instruction, participants were trained to operate agricultural drones for a range of essential tasks:

  • Pesticide spraying — applying inputs efficiently and uniformly across fields.
  • Crop monitoring — using aerial perspectives to assess crop health and growth.
  • Precision farming — supporting data-informed decisions that reduce waste and improve yields.

Drone Pilot Licenses and Equipment Distribution

The program delivered tangible, lasting outcomes for every trainee. Each participant successfully earned a Drone Pilot License, a formal qualification that validates their ability to operate unmanned aircraft. In addition, drones were distributed as part of the initiative, enabling the newly trained women to independently support farming operations in their respective regions. This combination of certification and equipment helps ensure that the skills gained translate directly into practical, on-the-ground impact within local communities.

A Historic Milestone for Women in Agri-Tech

This achievement positioned Kerala as the first state in India to empower women at this scale with advanced drone technology. Beyond enhancing agricultural productivity, the program opened new avenues for women to participate in the modern agri-tech workforce. It stands as a significant milestone in women's empowerment, technology adoption, and sustainable agriculture, reflecting Kerala's leadership in integrating innovation with community development.

The Broader Context

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, are increasingly recognized worldwide as valuable tools in agriculture, where they can support tasks ranging from targeted spraying to large-scale crop surveillance. By broadening access to such technology and the formal training needed to use it, programs of this kind help bridge the gap between cutting-edge innovation and the people who work the land. As a federation dedicated to promoting aerospace and robotics education and innovation across India, supporting this initiative aligns closely with the mission of bringing advanced technology skills to a wider and more diverse community.

By pairing skilled training with certification and equipment, the initiative reflects how technology adoption and community development can advance together.

Initiatives like this demonstrate the potential of collaborative partnerships between research institutions, state missions, and specialized federations to deliver meaningful change. For the women now flying agricultural drones across Kerala's districts, the training represents not just a new skill, but a new role in the future of farming.
